This paper illustrates a method of representing the geometry of a hob tooth profile in parametric form and of determining the surface equation of a generated gear as a function of hob design parameters and generating motion specifications through a mathematical model of the generation process. The described method permits the effect of hob profile deviations and hob alignment errors on the generated gear to be observed precisely. Hence, the tolerances on hob design parameters and allowable alignment errors can be effectively specified. This approach can be applied in any axial hobbing operations-conventional or climbing-for generation of helical or spur gears.
