Human engineering principles for automobile passenger compartments are discussed. The concept of dimensioning to the human is explained; the application of design limits to the two-and three-dimensional tools is evaluated. The comfort dimensioning practices followed by General Motors are reviewed along with the description of the car checking procedure.“In designing machines to suit the man, the place to begin is with the man himself … his size, shape, and capabilities. One then analyzes the nature of his task ‥ the actions he must take ‥ and finally the specific equipment he must operate.” – ‘McFarland’1 The human engineer follows this broad philosophy to create an environment fulfilling the physiological and psychological needs of the human occupant, be it a space capsule, a modern work-space planned kitchen, or the passenger compartment of an automobile. In keeping with this philosophy, a new and realistic interior comfort dimensioning system was developed by General Motors Styling Staff to aid the designer of the automobile passenger compartment.
