The optimized interaction of a DI gasoline combustion system with exhaust gas aftertreatment and engine management system is essential for the successful transfer of gasoline direct injection concepts into production solutions under the constraints of future emission regulations. By application of the complete set of available development tools, a DI gasoline combustion system could be developed meeting these requirements. Special emphasis has been concentrated on the optimum adaptation of the combustion system to the limited exhaust gas temperature range of the NOx storage catalyst technology. This technology has been analyzed leading to a comprehensive system layout and operational strategy, meeting EURO IV.
