The SHAPEMATE drawbead is introduced as a new idea for controlling sheet metal flow during stamping operations. This drawbead consists of a bead whose shape is perfectly matched by the curvature of the opposing groove of the drawbead section, allowing for sheet metal thickness. This shape matching forces the sheet metal to bend to the drawbead radii and therefore can produce a high restraining force at low bead penetration. The SHAPEMATE drawbead may be made in modules which are made from a folded metal belt which allows the drawbead module to follow the contour of the binder. They are fit into a pre-machined groove and shimmed to the proper height to produce the desired force. Laboratory experiments show that this new drawbead can produce the same drawbead force as a deeply penetrated conventional drawbead, but the restraining force for the SHAPEMATE draw-bead can be easily adjusted from zero to its maximum. This concept has been successfully tested in a pilot die and is now being tested in a production die.
