The purpose of this paper is to put the finite element method into proper perspective by exploring the approximate nature and model dependent character of the method. Modeling strategies and selection of appropriate finite element types are explained and the procedures are illustrated with several examples. Finally, the solution of two practical stress analysis problems are discussed in detail to demonstrate the proper utilization of the finite element method in real world applications. It is concluded that a stress analyst must establish clear objectives of his analysis, have at least an approximate idea of how the structure will behave, and have basic knowledge concerning the theoretical basis and properties of various finite element types in order to successfully use the finite element method in a cost effective manner.
