The main challenges faced by civil aircraft manufacturers are recalled and the opportunity to use “intelligent techniques” in the design of control and guidance systems in order to propose to airlines more and more competitive airplanes is discussed. To illustrate this thesis, the present communication quotes different applications and more particularly displays results concerning the development of an intelligent longitudinal guidance law for time-optimal speed control during the rollout phase of wide body civil transportation aircraft.
