The power loss of a rotary shaft seal influences the endurance lifetime. It is determined in particular by the radial force, an important feature of rotary shaft seals. Decreasing radial force results in increased endurance life by reducing power loss and self-heat-generation. The comparison of seals from 1940, with those of 1980 shows the success which has been achieved as well as the possibilities for the future. The measures for the reduction of power loss have been included.
