Volatile liquid pressurization provides an improved method of expelling storable propellants for spacecraft reaction control system engines by eliminating the requirement for a high-pressure storage and distribution capability. The Volatile Liquid System, which is particularly attractive if in-flight refueling is to be considered, utilizes the energy resulting from the phase change of a volatile liquid caused by a controlled heat input. Parameters to consider in volatile liquid selection and system design are presented. Typical test expulsion characteristics of subscale and flightweight systems are described.
