This paper reviews the problems of cleaning airborne deposits from insulators; shows that hot-line insulator washing is a safe, fast, and economical way to do this job; describes the procedures and various types of equipment used in hot-line insulator washing; and speculates on possible refinements of this equipment due to an increasing range of applications. More electric utilities are becoming interested in hot-line insulator washing as contamination problems in their areas increase.
