There is a trend in the Global automotive industry to increase the hybrid electric or complete electrified powertrains participation, mainly pursued by reducing emissions and fuel economy. In countries like United States and China many automakers are launching hybrid and electric vehicles and pursuing new technologies to reduce costs, reduce weight and improve energy efficiency. There are numerous studies about CO2 generation, comparing Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and the complete electrified vehicles production, including batteries, components and transportation, and the battery recycle process, which is still unknown. Other point to be highlighted is that the final cost of the products raises the question about the feasibility of electrification and how much the customer is willing to pay for the technology, besides the infrastructure investment by Government to provide charge stations. Brazil approved in December of 2018 the Brazilian Energy Efficiency Regulatory Program, ROTA 2030, which starts on 2022 with 11% improvement target in fuel consumption over the current INOVAR AUTO Program targets, and possibly same squeeze will be applied for the second phase in 2027, which will drive the industry for a high investment on development of new technologies, such as hybrid solutions. In order to minimize costs, while electrified powertrains do not achieve large scale, or waiting for new technologies with lower costs, internal combustion engines still may have opportunities to improve efficiency to keep playing. The scope of this paper is to compare the cost and efficiency of some enablers to improve fuel economy, including electrification, from a vehicle powered by ICE.
