The performance and emissions characteristics of an uncooled, thermally insulated, single-cylinder open-chamber diesel engine were investigated. The uncooled engine, in comparison to its water-cooled version, suffered from loss in volumetric efficiency and in fuel economy, from generally higher nitric oxide and hydrocarbon emissions and from higher smoke emissions. The deteriorations in fuel economy and smoke are believed to be caused by a lengthening of the combustion duration of the uncooled engine, which may have been caused by a reduction in the rate of injection of the fuel brought about by the elevated temperatures.
