A new design of an air induction system for a Four-cylinder automobile engine is described. The principle function of the system is the reduction of air induction noise. The potential and theory for improved engine performance is discussed. The system incorporates multiple side branch resonators tuned to the frequency of the fundamental air induction tone over the critical operating range of the engine, typically 2000 to 5000 rpm.The resonators are packaged in unique ways permitting a variety of configurations which can conform to available “low priority” space under the hood. The flexibility of this system allows it to be integrated into the hood or secondary dash, for example.Rules governing design are given. Packaging concepts are offered. Manufacturing and assembly considerations are discussed.
