Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) faces challenges in ignition control. In this paper, the HCCI ignition timing and heat release were controlled with the GDI multi-stage injection strategy and negative valve overlap. By this way, the concentration, temperature as well as chemical species can be controlled. The effect of the different injection strategies, such as split injection proportion and injection timing, were studied on a dual-cylinder four-stroke gasoline HCCI engine. The experimental results indicated that, two-stage direct injection is a practical technology to control the ignition timing and combustion effectively in gasoline HCCI engine. The coefficient of variation of the engine cycle decreases. The operation range of HCCI combustion was extended in both high load and low load limit.
