IN PRELIMINARY studies concerning the use of plasma acceleration for propulsion purposes, a series of measurements has been made of velocity and momentum of plasma bursts both in single-shot and pulsed operation over a range of pressures and input energies for various magnitudes and directions of magnetic field at the gaseous discharge. The effect of magnetic field on acceleration of the plasma and its contribution to the momentum transferred to a ballistic pendulum are discussed. Extrapolation has been made of power input for the small thrust obtained to that required for a one pound thrust over the range of pressures and efficiencies investigated. This paper is based on work performed under the auspices of the Ballistic Missiles Division, U. S. Air Force, Contract No. AF 04(647)-269.*
