Ethyl Corporation uses three chassis dynamometer rooms equipped with temperature and humidity controls for a wide variety of tests. In this paper, we discuss the controlled-weather room facilities and some of the test programs for which these facilities are especially suited. Emphasis is placed on the weather control feature of the rooms. We have found that controlling the weather markedly improves the reproducibility of fuel knockrating and octane requirement data. Also, easily obtainable variations of weather permit accurate tests of cold starting, engine warm-up, carburetor icing, and vapor lock. Effects of fuel and engine design are often found that would otherwise be hidden by weather variables. Our studies also have shown excellent correlation between controlled-weather room data and data from road tests conducted under the same climatic conditions.
