Millimeter wave emission from oxygen molecules in the atmosphere is investigated as a means for remotely measuring the ambient air temperature. Experimental results show that it is possible to obtain a remote measure of the temperature and temperature gradient. Temperature gradients typically associated with CAT are formulated in a model for computing radiometric temperatures that an in-flight remote sensor would detect.These results show that a millimeter wave radiometric system could be used more effectively than a direct temperature measuring system to provide a more reliable and earlier warning of impending clear air turbulence.
