One way to insure a fast and complete regeneration of a Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) is to add a Fuel Borne Catalyst (FBC) to the Fuel. In Europe, 3 million passenger cars are equipped with this technology without any recall.Rhodia has recently developed a more active FBC (Eolys™ 3rd generation). This FBC enables to decrease the on-board tank volume, and to increase the vehicle mileage without maintenance. The FBC enables a “Fit for life” DPF solution for 240,000 km, with no refilling of the FBC tank and no filter maintenance. In parallel, we present the conclusions of the VERT protocol for fuel additives showing the results for regulated and secondary emissions, as well as retention rates of FBC ashes in the filter. Moreover, combining the FBC with a Catalyzed Soot Filter (CSF) increases the efficiency and the mileage without maintenance while decreasing the fuel penalty. On top of that, using FBC gives flexibility for the thermal management of the system. This is key to combine filters and NOx abatement technologies, and meet the coming Euro 6 and US 2010 regulations.
