This discussion of recent contract work in the high-temperature antifriction bearing and lubricant fields covers airframe, accessories, and engine bearings. Temperatures range from -65 to 1200 F. Bearing materials are available that will give satisfactory service over the temperature range desired. Lubricants, however, are lacking, and at present there is no indication that a technological breakthrough is near. Barring such a development, it appears that an advance in the state-of-the-art can be achieved only by continued application of concentrated efforts in this direction.Although only work in progress at the time of writing is discussed, this program is being pursied on a continuing basis at WADD and further information concerning it will be disseminated to interested persons as soon as practicable.
