The power output of an internal combustion engine is directly proportional to the amount of air that can be forced into the cylinder per cycle and the amount of fuel that can be burned efficiently. The amount of air is most effectively increased by means of a mechanical supercharger. The purpose of this paper is attempting the non mechanical supercharging ways (Supercharging by means of gas dynamic effects) for naturally aspirated (NA) diesel engines and understanding in a better way the induction gas dynamics and its influence on engine performance characteristics. Wave dynamics in the intake system has strong influence on the performance of naturally aspirated internal combustion (IC) engines. This paper presents an application of Helmholtz resonator in the induction system of the naturally aspirated diesel engine to improve the engine breathing efficiency (volumetric efficiency).Investigation of pressure waves in the induction system and their effects on engine volumetric efficiency by using the Helmholtz resonator in the intake system layout was the main focus of the study. The VE (Volumetric efficiency) improvement with the proposed intake system on engine was found to be 5.11% relatively over the base intake system while giving benefit in the intake acoustic characteristics. The maximum VE with the proposed intake system is found to be 93.34 % as against 88.81% of the base intake system. The overall engine performance was also found to be improved by 3.2%.This increment in VE not only helps to reduce the fuel consumption but also reduces smoke emission
