Recent increase in man-caused additions to the atmosphere are markedly changing its quality. With rising population, these additions will increase in the future. This paper discusses the magnitude of the overall problem in relation to mass rate balances for particulate matter, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, lead, and hydrocarbons. Pollution from automobiles is then discussed specifically, along with some possible solutions (both with the existing reciprocating engine and alternate power sources), the effect of controls, and the long-term reduction of emissions. Methods of cooperation between government, manufacturers, and the public are suggested.
