Over the MWM 6.10/6.10T engine testing procedures those factors affecting lube oil consumption were thoroughly analyzed and optimized. This practice is final, though, since the increasing demand for ever lower operating cost engines, without sacrificing durability, along with the growing stringent demand of emission standard legislations have contributed to increasingly reduce lube oil consumption. The following key factors are analyzed in this paper: cylinder liner deformation, piston temperature, piston construction characteristics, cylinder liner honing roughness, and piston rings configurations.
