Cummins has increased the power availability of its K Engine family of engines. The family of six, twelve and sixteen cylinder engines now develops maximum ratings of 650, 1350 and 1800 HP, respectively. The use of two-stage turbocharging makes the Cummins approach unique. This paper describes the technical development of these engines from concept through pre-production durability testing, in the laboratory and in the field. The performance and mechanical improvements required to reliably produce the power are discussed. A desire to maximize product confidence led to a unique linking of production plant engineers with product development engineers.
