A technique is described for measuring the piston ring zone temperatures of Caterpillar one-cylinder test engines. Measurements made using this technique show that the temperatures increase in proportion to the degree of supercharge. There is a relationship between piston deposits and piston temperature, the highest deposits occurring where the engine is hottest. Further, it has been shown that differences in severity between engines run under identical outward conditions can be ascribed to differences in piston temperatures. Thus this technique for measuring ring zone temperatures may be used to reference engines and to aid in maintaining uniform engine severity.
