The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of recently developed pavement analysis/design methodologies which incorporate the results of research of the past 20 years and which permit specific distress modes to be considered in the design process.Procedures are included to consider the propensity for both fatigue and rutting in asphalt concrete pavement structures. Also included is a discussion of the influence of dynamic loads as influenced by truck suspension type on fatigue response. Results of analyses demonstrating the influence of increased tire pressures and axle loads on asphalt pavement performance are also summarized. For portland cement concrete pavements, recently developed procedures based on finite element idealizations are summarized with attention directed to the fatigue and step faulting modes of distress. Available results of the effects of dynamic loads are also discussed.
