This paper describes the Mercedes-Benz series 400 engines which are intended for use on trucks and buses. The series consists of in-line and Vee configurations with power outputs of 130-400 hp. All of the engines are designed to accomodate turbocharging to produce higher outputs. Also described are the series 7 rear axles which have a single lead carrying capacity of 9-16 tons and a power transmission capacity of 140-600 hp.Both the axles and the engines are designed for maximum part interchangeability in order to reduce production costs.
