The new generation of ZÖLLNER dynamometers has been developed in order to fulfill the steadily rising needs for the testing of prime movers (especially in engine development). These requirements concern above all a simple operating interface, high stability of steady state operating points, high reproducibility of measurements as well as short response times for instationary applications. In order to achieve these aims a number of development goals were defined:New operating and parameter configuration conceptIntelligent software for optimized controller adjustmentPower electronics with fully controlled thyristor bridgeOptimization of exciter coils (regarding inductivity and resistance)The new performance testing devices were themselves put to test - this report describes the field test results achieved with an eddy current dynamometer B-220 AE (with controller PRE 5) on a test bed at AVL in Graz / Austria. The results were compared to data gathered with the older generation eddy current dynamometer B-220 AC (with controller PMVE) which had been used in the past.Summing up, it can be said that the expectations in the new system have been met. According to the users operation of the system and calibration is simple and easy to carry out. Control in instationary applications is fast, and accurate, operating points are stable.
