Within the scope of this paper we have endeavored to define the problems associated with achieving acceptable performance of fuels and lubricants under sub-arctic conditions. Ingenuity in control of machine environment has overcome many of the problems encountered over the years when operating in the arctic and subarctic areas of Western Canada. Clearly defined recommendations for lubricants and fuels to be used in these areas are required and equipment manufacturers would be well advised to widen the range of their recommendations to cover low temperature extremes likely to be encountered in northern operation.
