Transverse Engine is a novel piston engine concept. As the name implies, the cylinder block is transverse to the output shaft. Basically, the engine has a set of four cylinders. Any number of sets of four cylinders can be arranged parallel to each other or radial to the output shaft. The linkage transmitting power from the reciprocating pistons to the rotating output shaft is efficiently competitive with the connecting rod and crankshaft mechanism in in-line engines. The configuration of the linkage itself does not cause any serious dynamic balancing problems. Cylinder wall side thrust is greatly reduced and torque characteristics are similar. Higher engine speed is feasible. Frictional losses and wear should be reduced and hence durability of the engine improved. A transverse engine could simplify the transmission system in a vehicle otherwise complicated with transversely placed conventional engines. For applications in trucks, off-road vehicles, boats etc. there are possible advantages. The new idea requires more study, analysis and development.
