This paper describes the development and testing of a high performance diesel particulate filter (DPF). The DPF system is capable of operating in a wide range of non-ideal conditions indicative of shift working industrial environments. Performance was verified with installation on 14 diesel engine powered fork lift trucks. The system is centered around the development and use of electrically regenerated ceramic fiber wound cartridges. Regeneration, the means by which the soot is removed from the filter, can occur relatively independent of total particulate matter (TPM) loading, in a reliable and failure free manner. The system monitors and controls the temperature of the filters during regeneration so as not to exceed an established temperature limit.
