The main objective of this investigation is to improve the performance of a diesel engine, to clean it's exhaust by fumigating methanol and to achieve maximum diesel replacement. The experimental study was carried out in a single cylinder diesel engine. A heat exchanger was provided to preheat the inlet air. The experimental setup was such that the methanol was fumigated in the heat exchanger very near to intake manifold. The result shows an appreciable reduction of emissions such as oxides of Nitrogen, smoke density and marginal increase in the performance when compared with normal diesel engine.
