Since no standards exist for communications between medical devices and medical information systems, interfaces must be designed and customized for each medical device. The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is sponsoring the development of the P1073 Medical Information Bus (MIB). The MIB committee is attempting to develop a standard for interfacing patient connected medical devices and host computers in the acute patient care environment.Included in the MIB is a standardized Medical Device Data Language (MDDL) that allows the host computer to communicate with any MIB medical device regardless of device type. When adding new medical devices to the MDSS software, modifications are minimized due to the functionality and commonality of the MDDL. Also if a medical device is MIB compliant then it can be integrated into the MDSS without hardware modification. The MIB can provide the Space Station Freedom (SSF) Health Maintenance Facility (HMF) medical devices with standard hardware and software interfaces to connect to the Medical Decision Support System (MDSS). The SSF will provide a Crew Health Care System (CHeCS) with three health related facilities: the HMF including a Hyperbaric Airlock Facility (HAL) and the Exercise Countermeasures Facility (ECF). Some of the medical devices located in these areas may need to be moved from one facility to another during certain medical procedures. The standardized interface on each of the medical devices will enable the MDSS to recognize and acquire data from each of them regardless of the facility to which they are connected. Overall the MIB will provide the HMF with standardized hardware and software interfaces for acquiring data from medical devices.
