An actual trend in the automotive industry represents the introduction of decentralized electric drive systems in different areas of application.Automotive steering systems represent a very important challenge for the electric drives. Active steering, electric power-assisted steering, electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering and full power steering (steer-by-wire) are the main target systems for electric actuation. Different topologies of these steering systems lead to special solutions for the electric drives.The paper presents on overview of actual high performance electric actuation technologies for automotive steering systems and offers therefore solutions based on permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM).
