The term “telematics” is now used to cover a large spectrum of in-vehicle functionality. This functionality has a correspondingly large spectrum of human-machine interface (HMI) needs. These HMI needs range from “headless” functions that require no user interaction at all, to complex functions with rich graphical or voice recognition interfaces. This paper describes the visual elements of a modern telematics system and design problems and the trade-offs that must be made in an automotive environment.
