Various theoretical models exist for describing the development of steering forces by tires. Examination of a number of details of tire behavior leads to the choice of a model in which the tire is approximated by a fairly rigid ring capable of slight amounts of internal twisting distortions and internal shearing. The ring is suspended in a flexible support provided by the sidewalls of the tire.Displacements underlying cornering force occur through a process of lateral distortion feedback from the interior of the contact patch to the parts of the tire immediately ahead of contact.
