For the long duration mission intended for the COLUMBUS pressurized modules (i.e. APM & PM2) the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) as used in former applications like Spacelab had to be advanced. The development encompasses modifications of assemblies/functions which have been part of existing systems (e.g the cooling air loops) as well as the implementation of new features like for example the trace gas contamination monitoring assembly.AH functions which form a part of one of the two ECLS systems are listed and described with their status at the beginning of Phase C/D. Special emphasis is given to the air loops.
