The non-steady state operating conditions of the engine (such as starting and stopping), result in steep temperature gradients in the component system of the piston/cylinder liner. The temperature gradients will produce thermoelastic dynamic or quasi-steady stresses in the components, that are much larger than the steady stresses, and this may result in the thermal failure of the components. In the paper, the relevant numerical models of the 3-D piston assembly-lubricant film-liner system have been established. The finite element model of the elements on the contacting surfaces of the system is deduced in order to study the non-steady temperature distributions in the system. The software, which based on the before-mentioned numerical models, has been developed and the non-steady 3-D heat transfer process of an engine is analyzed with it.
