Emission factors of a 2-liter gasoline car equipped with a three-way catalyst running in an urban expressway are presented in this paper. Emissions have been measured in the laboratory with car on dynamometer chassis performing driving cycles typical and representative of different traffic conditions as well as of different driving conditions in entering/going out the expressway. Driving cycles have been obtained through multivariate statistical analysis, classifying and clustering pieces of on-road detected car velocity profile, taking into account gear usage. Some starting conditions have been considered in the emission measurement in the laboratory, defined on the basis of the analysis of real catalyst temperatures. Average emissions are strongly influenced by driving conditions up to a factor of 6. A high effect of peaks has been detected on emissions, at high demand of power for car overtaking, also at high catalyst temperature. Emission factors achieved so far are the basis for the development of a comprehensive methodology for the emission evaluation of cars running in urban areas carried on at Istituto Motori.
