In transit applications, parallel hybrid electric drive systems enjoy distinct advantages over conventional diesels, series hybrid electric, and purely battery powered electric drive systems. These advantages have been demonstrated to include reduced weight, high efficiency, extended range, and reduced emissions. Furthermore, an advanced hybrid electric drive system utilizing wheel motors has made a practical true low floor bus viable.
