The generally held opinion that a clutch involves pure dry friction can no longer be maintained when organic facings are being used. Here we are probably operating in the boundary and mixed friction area, since solid-state body friction occurs only on some islands. Inbetween, cushions are built up by air and by gas or liquid emanating from cracked binders with the aid of aero- and hydrodynamics and also aero- and hydrostatics. Tests have enabled us to understand how we can reduce the aero- and hydrodynamic and the corresponding static effects.
