Turbochargers are being increasingly integrated into, or retrofitted to, all kinds of reciprocating internal combustion engines for vehicles. Turbocharged passenger car engines are now on the market. Improved performance and power concentration accrue from correlating the advantageous peculiarities of a piston engine and turbomachine. Procuction diesel engines are approaching specific fuel consumption values of 0.3 lb/hp-hr and specific weights of 3 lb/hp-hr.Development of components for simpler, as well as more sophisticated turbochargers, is somewhat ahead of present engine requirements. Good system integration and optimization can result in very compact economical power packs with better torque-speed characteristics. Progress in “miniaturized” turbomachinery with novel design features promises turbochargers for even smaller engines.
