This paper presents a N*N bi-directional star coupler and two types of connectors for plastic fibre. The N*N coupler is based on the mixing rod technique. Normally, when using a mixing rod the uniformity of the output ports is poor. The star coupler presented here combines low loss, good uniformity, low cost and ease of production. Intensive research has been carried out on light distribution in the mixing rod and the connection of the fibres to it.The two connector types can be easily terminated to plastic fibres: fibre ends are inserted into the connectors and the installer, often a mechanic, does not need to make an end-finish (polish or hot-plate) at the mating face of the connector.
