While operational procedures for V/STOL aircraft have yet to be developed, it can be seen that the ground guidance system for landing must have greater flexibility and capability than previous systems. A greater diversity of flight paths in both planes than is presently available is required. In addition, airport size and location dictates equipment which is small and site insensitive. These requirements are met by a microwave instrument landing system.Since microwave radio landing systems are predominantly line-of-sight, enroute navigation guidance using radio means must consider the utilization of other existing systems such as Loran or Omega.A description of recently available equipment for STOL landings is given.
