SENSORS AND ACTUATORS increasingly are the components which constrain the microcomputer-based engine control, affecting the system architecture and control laws used, system reliability, durability, and cost.Overview papers on the state-of-the-art of engine sensors have been published by the SAE in 1973, -78, and -80; and an actuator overview paper was published last year (1,2,3,4)*. This paper updates the 1980 sensor review and projects Future trends. The first generation of engine control sensors has been in production for some years now, and much of the usual component “shakeout” has taken place. Clear cut “winner” sensors are visible, along with some history of dissatisfaction with existing components and control laws. The authors suggest that a “second generation” of engine control sensors for passenger cars is in the wings, along with a new breed of more rugged sensors for the heavy duty diesel engine.
