Previous papers have described the measurement and prediction of the noise and vibration of four engine structure simulations. Several different optimisation techniques have been used to assess design modifications to minimise the radiated noise and vibration within specific design constraints. These optimisation techniques are described together with the results of a hardware assessment of the effectiveness of the proposed analytical design modifications. The results of the whole program are reviewed in the context of the increasing requirement for refined low noise powertrain structures and broad guideline recommendations are derived.
