The objective of this work was to develop a semi-empirical model for the in- cylinder soot oxidation prediction. As input data to develop and verify the model, experimental studies under diesel like conditions were conducted. A fast gas sampling valve was used to measure the concentration-time history of the major gaseous components (O2, CO, CO2, HC, NOx) as well as soot mass and temperature (as expected) and the instant concentration of molecular oxygen and soot. The induction time, which was a term first identified in this research work, is sensitive to the time history of the in-cylinder thermodynamic state and oxygen concentration. An multi-step implicit reaction scheme was proposed to describe the soot oxidation rate under diesel engine like conditions. The predicted soot concentration by the proposed model agrees very well with the measurements. It is intended to extend the model capability for DI diesel engine soot emission predictions.
