The present work analyzes the influence of rotating group leakage flows over the generated hydraulic pump noise. Firstly, the analysis is held numerically through a MatLab/Simulink based pump model and then the simulated results are checked experimentally. The work has aimed the slot-vane leakage path clearance changes which the experience has shown to have a direct correlation with the low-frequency noise perceived inside the vehicle, known as “moan noise”.Simulation shows that, varying slot-vane clearance from 0.01mm to 0.08mm, a large increase in the flow ripple low-frequencies is verified. Vehicular evaluation is carried out using pumps especially manufactured with different slot-vane clearances to check the simulations results. The subjective evaluation shows that the pump's acoustical performance goes down from “very good/acceptable” to “bad/unacceptable” when clearances vary the simulated clearance range confirming the numerical results.
