The paper presents methodology of early system validation for architecture of a modular controller through modeling and rapid prototyping techniques in a real time operating environment. The real time operating environment was used in development of a secondary electric power system (SEPDS) with solid state power controller (SSPC) technology. The System consists of multiple Line Replacement Units (LRUs) distributed across the aircraft; each LRU implements distributed controls with a modular configuration, named Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs). During the phase of redesign of the control architecture a real-time control using XPC target was developed. The challenges include interfacing the re-designed LRM with the existing backbone hardware and maintaining interface consistency for seamless exchange of the old hardware with new one. Another significant challenge is that old and redesigned Controllers need to co-exist; the functionality needs to be realized and validated before the new hardware actually becomes available. The procedure has been prototyped using Mathworks® MATLAB and SIMULINK. The non-real time simulations have been executed using a host machine and real-time simulations have been verified on a real-time target. The plant model used for simulation was the existing LRU, in which one of the LRM slots (connections) was extended to provide required interface to test the new enhanced functionality simulated on the real-time target. The signals were interfaced to the real-time target through a Signal Conditioning Box.The paper also discusses synchronization challenges involved in interfacing the plant hardware consisting of high speed communication devices with the rapid prototyping simulations running on the real-time target used in distributed controls of electric power distribution system.
