A body structure consisting of an outer stiffener and inner reinforcement was developed to provide resistance to deformation during a side and/or roof impact event. This structure was developed for a high volume SUV class vehicle. The structure was developed to meet stringent targets for intrusion at a lighter weight. Efficient use of advanced high strength steel in the vehicle center pillar structure yielded advancements in vehicle weight reduction, and contributed to a "GOOD" structure rating for IIHS SICE side impact and met the requirements for FMVSS 216 roof crush strength. These results were achieved while reducing the center pillar structure mass by 35%.
