Many rebuilt engines suffer from abnormal combustion after vehicle installation. Although the specific causes are varied, they are often the result of either poor rebuilding practices or an improper installation. Today's engines and the environment they live in are less forgiving than in the past so both rebuilders and installers must be increasingly concerned about their methods and procedures. Many of the possible causes and effects of detonation and preignition in a rebuilt engine are discussed along with a review of normal combustion.
