The important properties of automatic transmission fluids are discussed and methods employed by the industry to evaluate these properties are briefly described. Data are included which show that in the critical areas of low temperature fluidity, high temperature viscosity, oiliness and frictional properties, and rubber swell properties, the “used” fluid as well as the “new” fluid should be evaluated.
